News and Announcements
Bankbridge Regional Vocational Department News
The months of November and December were very busy for both the staff and students of the Vocational Department. Preparing for the holidays was fun and we are looking forward to an exciting new year.
The Horticulture classroom resembled a busy flower shop in the months of November and December. Students created and sold beautiful Thanksgiving centerpieces and holiday wreaths. On December 18th, our very supportive staff and parents did their holiday shopping at our Annual Open House. Students prepared many festive arrangements in all price ranges. The event was a huge success! Proceeds from our sales were deposited into the Student Activities Account to be used for future field trips and flower shows. On January 29th, our students will showcase their design ability and compete at the Southern Regional Flower Show, along with students from 12 other New Jersey schools. The show will be held in the Center Court of the Deptford Mall. All arrangements will be judged around 12:00 p.m. on Friday and will be on display through 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The students work very hard on their entries. It’s a great chance for the parents and staff to come and show their support! Media and Performing Arts high school students are currently producing 30-second videos highlighting the dangers of drinking and driving. These public service announcements will be entered into a county wide video competition in April. Middle school students are currently producing this months BBR News program. Highlights include Winter Fashion, Top Holiday Gifts, and the Best Super Bowl Guess. In March all students will begin preparing for our Talent Show to be held on Wednesday, May 19th. Select students will orchestrate our new set design and lighting patterns while others will work on costume design. Additional students will begin choreographing their dance sequences. The last unit of the school year will bring together both artists and disabilities. Students will research select disabilities and artists who have them. Students will compile this information and then each student will “teach” their class about the disability they’ve chosen and the artist who has lived with it. The students in Retail continue to be busy performing the many different jobs necessary to keep our store running smoothly. Stop down to the Hawk’s Nest any day and you will find our students assisting customers, operating the cash register, making sandwiches, filling lunch orders, continually making pots of fresh coffee, washing dishes, stocking shelves and so much more. While learning about the many responsibilities of running a store, they are also applying the lessons they’ve learned about food sanitation and how to work safely in their assigned areas. This marking period we have a brand new touch screen register system. Our students are all excitedly waiting their turn to try it out. By now many of our customers have learned the names of our students and look forward to talking to them each day. The students also enjoy the interactions with our staff. In the Auto Shop classroom, the students have been busy with the car wash fundraiser that also benefits the Student Activity Account. In addition, they have been maintaining the snow removal equipment and fixing everything from snowplows to salt spreading equipment. They are ready and waiting for more snow this winter season!
