Transition to Adult Life Program: For special needs students, ages 18-21
The Gloucester County Special Services School District is committed to meeting the needs of our special education students. To achieve the school-to-careers goals for many of our students, Bankbridge Regional has established a new program. This unique program is designed specifically to assist special needs students, ages 18 to 21, with a career development/transition program in an appropriate setting. The program will allow the student to gain functional employability skills for adult life.
The Bankbridge Career Center at GCIT will focus on the following transition skills: - Employability Skills - employment applications, interviews, internships, appropriate behavior for the workplace
- Functional Skills - essential life skills, functional mathematics, functional language arts
- Entrepreneurial Opportunities - Opportunity to run school stores, retail shop, office/printing shop, horticulture/landscape shop
- Community Experiences Exposure to community outings in a real-world setting such as to take a bus to shop, for internships, and meetings with community agencies (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Services, etc.)
- School-to-Careers - Job development, job coaching, monitoring at the work site, follow-up services
Curriculum at the Bankbridge Career Center will support transition skills: - Applied Functional Mathematics Balance a checkbook, practice money and budget skills, understand a paycheck, apply consumer skills, read time, manage breaks
- Applied Functional Language Arts - Complete an application or resume, research want-ads, read a bus schedule
- Employability/Community Skills Research, gain, and maintain employment: Proper dress, interview skills, appropriate employee behavior, attendance
- Entrepreneurial Program Learn the importance of meeting deadlines, work as a team, follow directions of a manager, learn skills through hands-on participation in live shops including a retail store, horticulture/landscaping, Office Depot (printing)
- Additional Courses - Human Health Care (child through senior care), school-to-careers paid employment, driver's education
Social Activities: Social activities are an important part of the high school experience. Students in the Bankbridge Career Center will be given the opportunity for continued participation in social events and activities through Bankbridge Regional. Some of the activities include: - Dances
